What Is Kybella, and How Does It Work?

Kybella is an injectable treatment used to improve moderate to severe fullness under the chin, often called submental fat or a double chin. Its active ingredient is synthetic deoxycholic acid, a substance that helps break down fat. When Kybella is injected into the fat beneath the chin, it disrupts targeted fat cells so the body can gradually process and clear them away.

Kybella is not a weight-loss procedure. It works best for patients who are close to their stable weight but have a stubborn pocket of fullness beneath the chin that does not improve with diet, exercise, or weight changes. For the right patient, Kybella can help sharpen the transition between the chin, jawline, and upper neck.

What Areas of the Face Can Kybella Be Used On?

Kybella is FDA-approved for fat beneath the chin. Although patients may notice improvement in how the jawline and upper neck look, the medication is not approved as a general facial fat-removal treatment.

Kybella may be considered when the main concern is:

  • Fat directly under the chin
  • A soft or rounded submental contour
  • Mild fullness affecting the jawline profile
  • A double chin that persists despite a stable weight
  • A desire for non-surgical fat reduction in the approved treatment area

Kybella is not meant for cheeks, lower-face jowls, widespread neck fullness, or loose skin. If you have skin laxity, you may need a different option, such as neck lift surgery, while a patient with a small fat pocket and good skin quality may be better suited for Kybella. During consultation, Dr. Mani can look at your anatomy in front of a mirror and explain which approach will actually address what you are seeing.
